Working in Public
The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best is now.
Let’s get this thing started. Don’t mind the scaffolding; we’re launching and building at the same time. There will be change.
WIP
This newsletter is a work in progress (WIP) that represents working in public (also WIP?). WIP I is publishing this newsletter while developing its form. WIP II is writing about current projects, mostly the Data Market Study that is digging into the structure and economics of markets for data. I welcome your ideas, opinions, and anything else on both WIPs, and as soon as I figure out how that works on this platform, I’ll share it.
As I get into the research, I plan to share some of what I’m learning here. There’s no point in holding everything back for a book that’s going to take (checks calendar) way too long. So expect notes, observations, models in development, interviews—who knows what else—starting with the next issue. For now, you can find the project announcement on the company site.
What to expect
I renamed my company to reflect an expanded research agenda (compared to the social media analysis years), but also to create a license to explore anything that seems useful or interesting. You’ll see that reflected in some of the newsletter’s regular sections:
Intro - A quote, a comment on current activities, leading into the issue’s content
Exploration - The main article for each issue
Inspiration - Interesting people I’ve discovered
Discovery - Sources & methods that caught my attention
TBR - Books that seem to be on topic, or nearly so. Which topic? It depends.
Squirrel! - Items I just have to share
As for frequency, I don’t know yet. Probably weekly, but let’s see how the project shapes up and learn from what you want from this, too.
A note for the earliest subscribers
For the very few people who signed up speculatively and get this in email: thank you. The name has changed since you subscribed (it was And, Not Or), but the mission has not. I hope you like it.
- Nathan

I find it brilliant we seem to have embarked on a similar venture on the exact same date (entanglement?).
I am really looking forward to reading what you find and explore!
Thank you thank you thank you for sharing all you're doing; inspiring others like me :D
Anyone who scans these comments will be unsurprised when your project(s?) show up in my Inspiration section. :-)
